Soon after qualifying Francis seized an opportunity to get into an in-house role, setting up a UK and EMEA legal operation for Geco (a Norwegian owned seismic survey company, doing first stage oil and gas exploration). He opted for a change into industrial gases with The BOC Group in 1989 (which became part of the Linde Group in 2006), where he performed various roles within the Legal Services team, including a 7 year stint in Sydney as General Counsel Asia Pacific, and the last 3 years in the head office working closely with the Chief Legal Officer to build and operate a cohesive global legal function.
Francis was then GC at Modern Water, an AIM listed company in the water sector. Most recently he has been the GC and Company Secretary at African Minerals, an AIM listed company with an iron ore mine in Sierra Leone. The collapse in iron ore price through 2014, combined with the challenges of Ebola, led to financial difficulties which ultimately resulted in a Chinese partner acquiring the business and the parent company going into administration in 2015. Since then Francis has enjoyed a bit of personal downtime whilst exploring opportunities for the next stage of his career.
